Drivers Dvb-dtv

This document tells how to get a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950 running on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron + Mythbuntu. I already have a Hauppauge PVR-350; both devices work together just fine.

Intro

There are a bunch of WinTV-HVR-950s out. As far as I can tell, they all have the same capabilities on Linux: just tune to an ATSC stream and provide it via DVB. The Linux drivers don't support the analog inputs yet.

So, just get the cheapest. Mine is the SL-1139-V2.3-US.

If you get the more expensive device, I think you can just substitute 'em28xx-dvb' below every time you see 'au8522'. Not sure. See [1] for more.

Procedure

We need to use the latest V4L drivers. The ones shipped with Hardy Heron aren't even close to working.

Remove Old Modules

Hardy's modules conflict with the newer V4L. Just move them out of the way entirely (this moves them to /root/2.6.24-19-generic-kernel-drivers-media).

This is safer than just deleting them. If V4L screws your machine up somehow, you can just 'sudo rm -rf /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/media; mv /root/`uname -r`-kernel-drivers-media-backup /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/media' to restore Hardy to exactly the way you left it.

Install Firmware

Install V4L

Reboot

I know, rebooting sucks. But it's a lot more reliable than crazy stuff like 'make reload'.

Plug in the HVR-950 and reboot. Your HVR-950 should just auto-recognize and the drivers should load fine. Look for something like this in your log messages:

This means it was found.

Ensure it Works

Scan for Channels

I'm using us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB, the table for terrestrial HD broadcast in the US. You'll need to choose whatever is appropriate for your region.

Watch DVB using MPlayer

Change channels with h and k, volume with 9 and 0. Everything should just work.

Panasonic motherboards driver downloads

Only a single program can use the DVB device at once. If you've already set up MythTV, the back-end will be monopolizing it, and you must run 'sudo /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend stop' before running mplayer. When you're done with mplayer, of course, 'sudo /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start'.

Set up MythTV

This doesn't work yet. I don't know why.

Backend

Start the MythTV Backend Setup (System -> Administration).

  • Capture Cards -> New capture card
    • Card Type: DVB DTV capture card
    • The card should now auto-detect and you'll see 'Frontend ID: Auvitek AU8522'
    • Finish
  • Video Sources
    • I don't know if you need to set up a separate video source or not..? I did, just to be safe.
  • Input Connections -> DVB:0
    • Enter a display name and tell it to use your new video source.
    • Scan For Channels.
      • I used the '(5-1) Minus' ATSC Channel Separator.
      • It will take a long time but it should find a bunch of channels.
  • Channel Editor
    • You should now see all your new HD channels.

Quit the backend setup. No need to mythfilldatabase.

Front End

Fire up the MythTV front end and watch TV.

If you currently have an analog card, you'll need to switch sources. Hit Menu -> Switch Source and select the HD source you set up above.

Everything should just work!
